Black/Note initially created a stir partly because many on the East Coast have a stereotyped view of music from Los Angeles and were not expecting a young sextet of superior musicians dedicated toward revitalizing jazz to emerge from L.A. Although this group does stick to originals throughout their second release (their debut for Columbia), the often hard-driving music is not all that innovative, but instead is a logical extension of the hard bop tradition. Lovers of classic Blue Note albums should enjoy this dynamic set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
